La Paz has a unique and beautiful setting. Situated
300 metres below the altiplano, the city sprawls upwards around the steep
sides of a canyon. Best viewed from above, with the snow-capped peaks
of Mount Illimani in the background, La Paz is an interesting architectural
mix of both modern and colonial styles. There are several good museums
and a number of weird and wonderful traditional markets. Nearby day excursions
include, the world’s highest ski resort at Chacaltaya and the mysterious
pre-Inca ruins at Tiahuanaco. Travel north from La Paz, cross the Andes,
then drop down through the cloud into the lush sub-tropical valley of
the Yungas. Hummingbirds dart amongst the coffee and banana plantations.
The little village of Coroico is a magical place to head to if you are
looking for warmer temperatures and a few days at lower altitude.
