As the Andes Mountains fall away to the west so the
vegetation changes into dense primary rainforest. The Amazon Rainforest
covers nearly two-thirds of the landmass of Peru, the vivid colours and
loud animal calls makes for a complete contrast to the desolate and silent
altiplano. Fly from Lima or Cusco to the southern jungle town of Puerto
Maldonado. Travel further into the rainforest by motorised canoe before
alighting at your chosen jungle lodge. Howler Monkeys swing from the
trees and piranhas patrol the rivers; your experienced guide will help
you look for these and many other tropical creatures. If you wish to
spend your time on or near to the Amazon River, fly north to Iquitos
and stay at a riverside lodge, alternatively board a cruiser and sail
along this mighty river.
