With its close proximity to the US and with excellent
air links to the rest of the world, Cancún has grown over the
past 30 years at a rapid rate and is now Mexico’s number one beach
destination. Large international hotels vie for space along the narrow
sand spit that juts out from the mainland. Beautiful white sandy beaches,
crystal clear Caribbean waters, nearby Mayan sites and every imaginable
amenity help to retain the city’s standing. Should you prefer something
a little quieter, then travel southwards towards Belize, where the beautiful
coastline continues but the pace of life slows. The island of Cozumel
is fantastic for snorkelling and reef diving; Mayan activity is visible
across the island; many small sites receive few visitors and are often
still surrounded by dense rainforest jungle.
