Riobamba is a traditional Ecuadorian market town. Four
hours to the south of Quito, it is also the starting point for one of
the world’s most exciting rail journeys. Originally departing from
Quito, trains used to pass through Riobamba on their way down to Guayaquil.
Much of the line has since been closed down and today only the extraordinary
100km stretch between Riobamba and Sibambe remains. A couple of hours
chugging through the high Andes are followed by a rapid descent downwards
towards the Pacific Ocean as the line drops a staggering 800 metres!
In order to facilitate such a drop, a series of switchbacks were built,
and these have come to be known as the ‘Devils Nose’. The
scenery and the engineering skills required to build the line are quite
outstanding. On arrival in Sibambe it is possible to continue on by road
to Guayaquil or to the colonial town of Cuenca.
