Part of the Netherlands Antilles group of islands,
Bonaire lies 50 miles off the coast of Venezuela. A beautiful and largely
undeveloped island, Bonaire is a true relaxation destination. The main
town of Kralendijk consists of little more than a few roads, the people
are friendly and the pace of life slow. Nearly all of the island’s
hotels are located on the west of the island and north of Kralendijk.
Travel further inland and you are in almost virgin territory. The lack
of human interference has made the island a popular wildlife breeding
ground, flamingos are particularly in evidence. Coral reef surrounds
the island and in 1979 the waters were declared to be one large marine
park. The ocean is particularly clear around Bonaire and the diving and
snorkelling are superb. If you like to unwind with few outside distractions
then you should consider a few days in Bonaire.
