Off Canada’s West coast, Vancouver Island is
a short flight or ferry ride away from the British Columbia mainland.
The largest Pacific island in the Americas, Vancouver is a relaxed place
with great scenery and fantastic marine wildlife. Victoria, the capital
of British Columbia, is located on the coast in the far south; the views
over to Olympic National Park near Seattle are superb. Hire a car and
head northwards, the roads are usually quiet and are a pleasure to drive
on. During the summer months pods of Orca and Humpback Whales pass by
the island. The small town of Tofino on the west coast and the even smaller
hamlet of Telegraph Cove on the north are both excellent places to board
boats and go whale-watching. Black Bears are to be found inland, while
a short float plane ride from Campbell River on the east coast takes
you to Knight Inlet Lodge, one of the best places in the Americas to
see Brown ‘Grizzly’ Bears.

premier wilderness retreats. A float plane ride from Campbell River is
required to reach this once trapper’s hideaway. There are a small
number of the cosy wooden rooms, their restriction on numbers helps preserve
a wonderful and intimate atmosphere. The wildlife viewing is outstanding,
Orca and Humpback Whales can be found in the nearby Johnstone Strait,
Black and Brown Bears can be seen from the expansive deck area.
