A seemingly endless carpet of green and blue, the Amazon
Rainforest covers a vast area of North and West Brazil. Such is the extent
of this gigantic eco-system that tracts of it are found in seven neighbouring
countries. Cutting through the heart of the forest, the mighty Amazon
River flows eastwards towards the Atlantic Ocean. A lifeline to many,
the river steadily increases in size until it over 20 kilometres wide!
Established in the 19th Century, Manaus has grown into the region’s
largest city. Famous for its grand opera house and fine cathedral, Manaus
is the starting point for cruises along the river and its many tributaries.
Cruising is an excellent way to fully appreciate the river, the rainforest
and the abundant wildlife. Alternatively there is a number of well-equipped
jungle lodges located deep in the rainforest. Local guides will take
you to meet indigenous tribes, teach you to fish for piranhas and should
you so wish, help spot caiman with spotlights at night-time.
