Guatemala’s premier Mayan site is Tikal in the
north of the country. Flying first to Flores it is a further 50 kilometres
along a good road to reach the site. Unlike other major Mayan sites in
Mexico and Belize, Tikal is unusual in that it is found deep in the rainforest.
On a grand scale, you need to walk in excess of 15 kilometres to cover
the whole site. The workmanship throughout is incredibly intricate and
the 40 metre plus temples that shoot up to the sky are extraordinary.
If you have a head for heights you can climb many of the temples and
the views from the top are breathtaking. All around there is virgin rainforest,
punctuated with other temples that surpass the forest canopy. Accommodation
is available at the site, however this is pretty basic, a good alternative
is to stay 30 kilometres away at Lake Petén Itzá. The lake
is a wonderful place in its own right with a high concentration of wildlife.
