A rural region, there are several excellent Mayan sites
and a number of excellent wildlife reserves. The ruins at Altun Ha are
amongst the most popular in Belize. Partly restored the site has a number
of impressive temples. Created in 1984 the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary
is a must for its high concentration of migrant and resident birds. Further
north, near the border with Guatemala, Chan Chich is one of Central America’s
best located and most fascinating lodges. Chan Chich, is sited deep in
the rainforest within the site of an ancient Mayan settlement. The incredible
mix of wildlife and ancient history is extraordinary.

This is a must. Chan Chich is a unique lodge located in the far North
of Belize near the border with Guatemala. Surrounded by dense rainforest,
with well planned trails to explore, the lodge has been built amongst
the remains of an ancient Mayan site. The sight of parrots flying amongst
the grassed over temples is truly extraordinary.
