Lake Atitlán rightly deserves its reputation
as being the world’s most beautiful lake. A two hour drive from
Antigua takes you up through the highlands and then down to the lakeshore.
Viewed from the north shore the lake is very impressive. Three volcanoes
rise between 1500 and 3100 metres on the southern shore and looking at
these across a calm, tranquil, shimmering lake is an amazing experience.
Staying near the small town of Panajachel, it would be very easy to spend
the whole afternoon by the pool of the Hotel Atitlán taking in
the incredible views. Motor launches connect the small town and villages
that line the lakeshore. Crossing from one side to the other takes about
half an hour, the journey south takes you up close to one of the mighty
volcanoes. A region of natural beauty, Lake Atitlán is the perfect
base for visiting the markets and villages of the highlands.
