Despite being such an inhospitable land, many different species have decided to make the region their home. There are 17 different species of penguin to be found across the planet and most of these are also to be found in Antarctic waters. South Georgia alone is home to a resident population of over 500,000 pairs of breeding King Penguins, while the Falklands counts five different species of penguin amongst its annual visitors. Elephant Seals can be found all over, as can several species of whale, most notably Humpback and Southern Right. The thick grasslands of the Falklands Islands are ideal nesting grounds for the mighty albatross. Several albatross species can be found here including the largest bird of them all the mighty Wandering Albatross. With a wing span of over three metres, this magnificent bird is able to fly for hundreds of miles scouring the ocean for food.
