Alaska’s largest island, Kodiak is home to the
world’s largest carnivore the mighty Brown ‘Kodiak’ Bear.
Weighing in at up to 1500 pounds these are immense beasts. Approximately
2500 bears live on the island, they maintain their healthy weight by
sticking to a high protein diet. Food is not short in supply, every year
they gorge themselves on the many thousands of salmon swimming in the
open rivers and lakes. Known as the ‘Emerald Isle’, the landscape
during the summer months is a verdant green, the mountains and valleys
seem to ooze colour and life. Fly west from the town of Kodiak for the
prime wilderness locations. Hiking, fishing and wildlife viewing are
all first class.
