Katmai is a magnificent national park, with great wildlife
and stunning scenery. The centrepiece of the park, the Valley of Ten
Thousand Smokes, was created as a result of the eruption in 1912 of the
Novarupta Volcano. The eruption is by far and away the largest seen in
modern times. Pumice from the volcano could be found half way around
the world and summer temperatures that year were two degrees cooler as
a result. Today the park is a place of tranquillity, much of the ash
remains buried in the valleys but the flora and fauna has returned. Moose
and sometimes wolves can be seen in the dense forests, or along the expansive
bays. During July, Brown Bears can be seen wading through rivers waiting
to catch the large Sockeye Salmon as they swim upstream.
